Tbilisi is not an easy city for cycling, but it has the potential to be an extraordinary one.
Within and around the Georgian capital, riders can find flat roads, long mountain climbs, short and steep ascents, historic cobbled streets, gravel tracks, parks, valleys and rural landscapes—all within a relatively small area. Yet cycling remains a niche activity, and many of these routes have never been properly documented.
Technology makes it easy to create GPS tracks, view maps and follow routes on a bike computer. In my experience, however, these tools do not fully replace a clear, traditional elevation profile. A well-designed profile gives an immediate sense of a route: its shape, gradients, difficult sections and the places it passes through.
This website was created to document cycling in and around Tbilisi in that spirit.
It brings together road climbs, urban cobbled sectors, gravel routes and longer rides across the hills, valleys and villages surrounding the city. Every route is based on roads I have ridden personally and includes practical information about distance, elevation, gradients, road surface, traffic and possible extensions.
The aim is not simply to collect GPS tracks, but to explain what each ride actually feels like: where the hard sections begin, which roads are exposed or busy, where the views reward the effort, and which routes are best suited to road, gravel or mountain bikes.
Cycling in Tbilisi also comes with real challenges. Heavy traffic, limited respect for cyclists, poor road maintenance and the lack of shade along many major roads can make riding difficult. In summer, exposed sections may become extremely hot, while open roads can be demanding in strong winds.
Despite these limitations, the city has enormous cycling potential. This is a personal guide to discovering that potential, one route at a time.
All classifications, difficulty ratings and route descriptions are personal estimates based on direct experience. Road conditions, traffic and accessibility may change, so riders should always check current conditions and ride responsibly.
