Kumisi Lake is a large but relatively overlooked reservoir close to Tbilisi. The route is not especially demanding in terms of elevation, with just under 500 metres of climbing, but it presents two important challenges: a short section on the busy Rustavi Highway and a long gravel sector in poor condition. The off-road portion is best suited to a mountain bike; it is possible on a gravel bike, but some sections may be uncomfortable.
Starting from Liberty Square, cross Baratashvili Bridge and descend through the Old Town towards Ortachala. From there, join the Rustavi Highway and follow it briefly before turning towards Krtsanisi. The road continues through a quiet rural landscape of scattered houses and open countryside.
Beyond Krtsanisi, leave the asphalt and turn right onto the gravel road leading towards the Svan Tower and Kumisi Lake. The first part is rough and stony. Once you reach the lake and turn right, the track becomes a simple dirt road. This section is better suited to a mountain bike than a gravel bike and can become very muddy after rain. It continues for approximately 6.5 kilometres towards Kumisi. There is virtually no shade anywhere along the route.
Once you reach Kumisi, the only significant climb of the day begins. It is relatively short and is followed by a long descent through Zemo Teleti and Kvemo Teleti, eventually returning to the Rustavi Highway and Tbilisi.
Stray dogs may be encountered in the rural sections. They usually bark or run behind cyclists rather than presenting a serious threat, but it is still advisable to remain alert. Despite the rough terrain and traffic concerns, the open countryside and views around the lake make this a rewarding mixed-surface ride.
